Hey everyone. I've been back in the States for over a month now, and I've completed my dissertation work. Thanks for all of your help and support. If you are interested in reading my research on motivating children to sing together, let me know - I'll send you the pdf. Take care, and thanks for reading!

Just wanted everyone to know that I'm safe and sound in Atlanta, USA. So far, my friends in London are safe and accounted for as well, but its a scary world over there. Thanks for your prayers, but I don't think we should stop quite yet.

Wow! This year has flown by. I'm heading back to the States tomorrow afternoon, and I can't believe it. Just an FYI - the house I posted about earlier fell through, but Andrea already has her awesome house detector on the move, and she found another one that looks great. I'll keep you posted.

In the last few days, I've been running around like crazy. Tracy left on Thursday to meet up with her parents 100 miles north of here. She should be heading back to the States today.

I packed up my life at College Hall. It was tough to leave actually - since I've lived there since October. But I managed just fine, and Spud picked me up Friday morning with all of my suitcases packed and ready for flight. He dropped me off at his flat for the weekend, and he took off for Wales.

Del and Jamie arrived on Friday, and we met up for a late lunch at Wagamama's close to their hotel. Then we went to Leicester Square to get some theatre tickets for that evening. We saw the Producer's, which was a fantastic and hilarious show.

Saturday, we did a bus tour, and we saw the Tour of London. It was really amazing, and there was so much to see at the one attraction. After that, we took a boat tour along the Thames. I had seen most everything before except for a pirate ship! oooooh! Then we ate at Texas Embassy (mmm, Mexican food) and walked over to Leicester for tickets for the Philadelphia Story for Del and JT that night. (They loved it!) Before the show, we went to Hamley's, a HUGE, 6-story toy store. We had fun playing with the displays and taking funny pictures. Then I headed back to the flat for a nice, quiet evening.

Sunday, we weren't supposed to meet up, but Del called to invite me to join them for The Lion King for the matinee showing. It was absolutely AMAZING!! The puppetry, staging, costume design, and music were out of this world, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole show. I bid them well and came home to check my email, and I had received one from Bruce Fike, my boss from last summer. We met up last night for dinner - we went to this lovely Thai place in Trafalgar Square, and then I showed him around the area a bit, sneaking in an ice cream cone just in case. :)

Came home to find Spud watching TV. Pleasant surprise. :) Went to bed early and got up today for a dissertation meeting and tying up all my loose ends here in London. Woohoo! Must get going, and I'm sorry I've been slacking on the updates - I haven't had the internet! Hope this finds you all well, and I can't wait to catch up with you all in person when I get home tomorrow!! Miss you.

I just got out of the worst meeting I've ever sat in. I am the student rep for my course, and there is an annual meeting with the course instructors and the rep. Well, I was selected, not elected, because I am an English-speaking student who lives nearby. And I never wanted to, but I did it.

So one of my duties was going through and analyzing data for the feedback forms that everyone filled out at the end of the modules. So I did it how I knew how. No one gave me guidance or specified that they wanted it this most specific way. And I go into this meeting to present this data, and I get devoured. It was awful. I am taking time out of my days in London, time that I never wanted to, and I get treated like that? Unlike them, I'm not paid to be there. I don't have ANY incentive to do it, but I think I did a very good job. With a little encouragement, I wouldn't have even minded. I'm so angry. It was really unfair, and one tutor in particular made me feel so inadequate that I shouldn't even be in the course. I've never felt so free walking out of a meeting into the pouring rain. Washing the wounds of people who don't deserve anything from me.

Student Rep no more. I represent myself. And I am NEVER going to do that again. I am never going to let people select me to do something that I have no desire to do, and do it out of some obligation that I've created that in reality, does not exist.

I hope my going brings them peace.

PS: an email I received a few minutes after posting the above...

Dear Noelle,

Many thanks again for undertaking the role of SR. It has been very much appreciated.

I am attaching the pro-forma for the MA evaluations. The work you have already done is really helpful, but as suggested, we need to make the form commensurate with the forms from the last 4 years in readiness for our Quinquennial Review. Thanks a lot for offering to transfer the information - it is quick and easy to fill in and I think self-explanatory - however if this is going to put pressure on you in any way that would affect your coursework let us know - we will find another way.

Let me know if you have any queries. I think you will need to see the forms themselves, too, to get a few comments that are not currently included. If you just fill in what is here, and put 0 where there are no ticks so that people can see what the choice was, that will be fine.

Don't go back to the States without saying goodbye!

This is from the tutor who was most rude to me at the meeting. I'm so furious. I love that she never mentioned me doing any more work at the meeting, but she didn't hesitate to be passive-aggressive about it and ask me to via email.

I am SO angry.

PPS: Just looked at the attached form - Its almost identical to what I did.

More angry. I DON'T HAVE TIME!!!!!!!

Okay, enough rambles for now. HAPPY FRIDAY!!
About this Entry
Jun. 15th, 2005 @ 11:50 pm Its time for MUSICALS!!
So several weeks ago, I went to Peterborough for the weekend to stay with Joy, and we decided to go see "Saturday Night Fever." Well, that happened last night. It had zero plot, but the dancing was SPECTACULAR! Anyway, that was fun. woohoo!

Then tonight, Angie asked me to go to dinner with her near Leicester Square, and we walked by Les Mis. I've been kinda craving it lately. I've only seen it one time, when I was nine years old IN LONDON! So it was time for another dose. So I got a fabulous seat (a few rows in and dead center) for a student price. Man, I love being a student. It was so wonderful - the production had me mesmorized the whole time, in awe over each moment that the characters were on stage. Jean Valjean (sp?) had an interesting sound that I wasn't expecting - rather like Tom Waits. It was an interesting twist that I didn't like at first, but it grew on me.

So this whole experience showed me that it'd be fun to sing on stage, but I can't move around in any normal looking fashion, so I'm destined to just be showcased in my parents' living room (dates and times tba).

It is time for bed. London is a fun town that I'm going to miss. Before I part for the night, I want to make a list.

To See Before I leave (in 20 days):

  1. Phantom of the Opera (I've NEVER seen it)

  2. Billy Elliot

  3. And whatever else I can get to with my student card :)

Alright, now it really is bedtime. But just in case you know of any, thoughts on West End musicals or plays that I should/should not see?

Noelle =)

"The pen is mightier than the sword - and considerably easier to write with."

- Marty Feldman

I'm heading off to the British Library for the afternoon. I had a great meeting with Sue Hallam today, and she gave me a copy of her post-doctoral thesis. Woohoo! She also got me really pumped about my dreams involving music. We shall see if Noelle Laborde Ross becomes somebody who makes the difference she wants to...

Then I photocopied. A lot. I don't even want to disclose how much. I'm going to be reading journal articles forever. And ever.

In conclusion, I think that a lot of people have taken Marty's words of wisdom to heart and have written more than I will ever have time to read, but I'll die trying. :)

Have a lovely Monday!
